Preparing your RPL evidence can feel confusing, especially when you are not sure which documents are useful. However, you may already have much of the information you need in your emails, employment records, phone or workplace files.
Recognition of Prior Learning, commonly called RPL, is an assessment of the skills and knowledge you have already gained through work, previous training or other experience. A formal RPL assessment must be completed by a Registered Training Organisation, or RTO.
Why Is RPL Evidence Important?
Your work experience alone is not enough. You must be able to show how your experience matches the requirements of the qualification.
Good RPL evidence helps the assessor understand:
- The type of work you completed
- How long you worked in the role
- The tasks you performed
- The skills you used
- Whether your experience is current
- Whether the evidence belongs to you
The final evidence requirements may be different for each qualification and applicant.
Common Types of RPL Evidence
There is no single document that works for everyone. Usually, a combination of documents gives a clearer picture of your experience.
You may be asked to provide:
- An updated resume
- Job descriptions or employment contracts
- Employer or supervisor reference letters
- Payslips, rosters or employment statements
- Previous qualifications and training certificates
- Workplace photos or videos
- Completed forms, reports or work samples
- Licences, tickets or professional registrations
- Performance reviews or workplace records
An RTO may request resumes, certificates, performance reviews, job descriptions and other documents that show your previous skills and experience.
How to Prepare Your Evidence
Start by collecting documents from your current and previous workplaces. You do not need to send everything immediately. First, choose the items that clearly relate to the qualification you are seeking.
Give each document a simple name. For example:
Employment Reference – ABC Care – 2025
You can also write a brief note explaining what the document shows. This makes it easier for the assessor to understand why the evidence is relevant.
Make sure your photos, videos and scanned documents are clear. Also, check that employer contact details are current because the assessor may need to confirm your experience.
What Happens When Evidence Is Missing?
Do not panic if you cannot find every old document. Some applicants may have many years of experience but limited paperwork.
Depending on the qualification and the RTO’s requirements, other assessment methods may be available. These could include an interview, practical demonstration, workplace observation or questions about your role.
However, the assessor decides whether your evidence is enough. Therefore, no RPL outcome should be guaranteed before the formal assessment is complete.
How RPL Sydney Can Support You
RPL Sydney helps applicants organise and prepare their RPL evidence before an independent RTO assessment.
The team can help you understand which documents may be relevant, identify possible evidence gaps and present your experience more clearly.
RPL Sydney is not an RTO and does not provide training or issue qualifications. The final assessment and qualification decision must be made independently by the assessing RTO.
